How do I sign up for housing?
New Student Orientation will be mailing out the New Student Guide to all First Year students in the beginning of May and all transfer students in June. It will contain an instruction sheet on how to sign up for housing by logging onto our web site. You will need your NetID and password to do so. The Registrar's office will be sending this to you in a separate mailing which will go out at the same time as the New Student Guide. Once you receive these mailings, you may register for housing by completing the Living Preference Questionnaire.
Do I need to return the copy of the Housing Occupancy Agreement that I received in the New Student Guide?
No, the Housing Occupancy Agreement sent in the New Student Guide is for your reference only. You will sign the agreement electronically after your housing assignment is sent out in early August.
I would like to be a commuter student. Is it possible for first year or Sophomore students to live off-campus?
Georgetown University requires that first year (freshman) and sophomore students live on campus as a condition of enrollment unless they meet one of the following conditions:

  • The student has attained the age of 21 prior to the start of the academic year.
  • The student's local residence is with parents, legal guardians, or immediate family over the age of 21.
  • The student has a documented medical condition which necessitates living off-campus.
  • The student is married or must live with a dependent.
If you meet at least one of these conditions, please go to the Living Preference Questionnaire page and choose the option for students claiming exemption. After choosing this option, you will be able to download the exemption form. Complete the form and return it along with the required documentation specified in the document.

The form must be received in the Housing Office by July 7, 2008.
I am a Junior transfer student. Am I required to live on campus?
As a Junior, the University does not require you to live on campus. You may choose to live off-campus or to request on-campus housing. If you choose to live off-campus, the Office of Off-Campus Housing Referral Services is a great resource to help you find housing in the area. Their email address is: guochrs@georgetown.edu . The Housing Office also hosts students for a Search Weekend. Please see the following site for more information about Search Weekend: http://housing.georgetown.edu/academic/new/.
I am a junior transfer student who would like to live on campus. How do I request on-campus housing?
You may request on-campus housing by completing the Living Preference Questionnaire on line.

What is the rate for on-campus housing? Is there a housing deposit?
You can see the rates for housing here. The housing assignment is for the entire academic year and half of the annual rate is billed to your student account each semester. There is no separate housing deposit.

Since housing assignments are not completed by the time initial bills are charged, all freshmen and sophomore transfer students will be charged a "New Student Housing" charge in the July bill. Once assignments are completed, additional charges or credits will be made to the student account based on the final assignment. We will notify students so that you can be aware of the charge before service charges are made.

When will I know my housing assignment and roommate?
In early August, all first-year students and transfer students will receive an email from the Housing Office with a link to a personalized web page where you can view your housing assignment, a description of your residence hall, room number, room rate, your roommate's name and address, your post office box number and combination, and move-in date and information. We ask that you do not contact us to request phone numbers of your roommates, since that is confidential information which we cannot release.
Can I change my room assignment?
A student's room assignment cannot be changed without serious cause. No student may initiate a room change during the first two weeks of the semester. When a room change is necessary, each student involved must adhere to the guidelines established by the Office of Housing Services and the Office of Residence Life.
How do I request a particular person as my roommate?
You may request a particular roommate by entering his/her NetID in part two of the roommate selection process. If you filled out your Living Preference Questionnaire by Monday, June 15, 2009, you will receive an email on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 directing you to log on to part two. Roommate requests will be honored only if both students request each other. You should ask your potential roommate for his/her NetID in order to facilitate this request. The Housing Office will not furnish NetIDs to third parties.
How do I request to live in a particular residence hall?
Housing assignments are generated by computer, based on the answers on the Living Preference Questionnaire, and are carefully reviewed by Housing staff. Requests to live in specific residence halls will not be considered unless there is a religious or health reason for requesting a particular hall, (such as need for a private bath). Please indicate that reason to us in a separate email to newstudenthousing@georgetown.edu.  It is our experience that students place more value on the friendships made in the residence hall than on the hall's location.
Are there single gender floors available?
Single gender floors are available in Harbin Hall and Village C. New South floors are all co-ed. On co-ed floors, separate hall baths for males and females are located on each floor. Only Village C rooms have private bathrooms.

All apartment spaces, available to transfer students only, are in single gender apartments.
What is the guest policy in the residence halls?
Non-Georgetown visitors to a residence hall must present identification at the security desk and use the desk phone to call the resident to escort them into the hall. While guests are on campus, student hosts are responsible for their actions. Residents must accompany their guests at all times. The need for a student to live in reasonable privacy takes precedence over a roommate's entertainment of a guest in the room.

Students must register overnight guests in the Residence Hall Office and notify the Resident Assistant of the guest's presence. Guest passes are issued for a maximum of three days unless authorized for an extension. Guests may not stay in unoccupied student beds without the written consent of the student whose bed is to be used. Cohabitation, which is defined as overnight visits with a sexual partner, is incompatible both with the mission of the University and with the rights of the roommate.
How many years of housing am I guaranteed?
On-campus housing is required and thus guaranteed for all full-time first-year (freshmen) and sophomore students. Junior and Senior students may apply for a third and fourth year of on campus housing during Housing Selection that begins in the Fall. The third year of on-campus housing will be offered as space is available for either the junior or senior year. All third-year requesters will be given equal priority, regardless of class year. Students who are able to live on campus for four years when space is available have a lower priority for housing selection than those who are selecting for a third year.
What is the policy on smoking in the residence halls?
In accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia which prohibit smoking in public areas, and in order to ensure the health and safety of residents, smoking is prohibited in all residence hall rooms, apartments, and townhouses, including common areas and private residential spaces. Members of the community who choose to smoke must do so in designated areas outdoors at a distance from the building that does not block entrances, transmit smoke into buildings, or cause others to be exposed to second-hand smoke.
What are quiet floors?
All residence halls have daily quiet hours that are enforced between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on nights preceding undergraduate class days and between 12:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. on other nights. Quiet floors give the residents an opportunity through the hall's Community Living Agreement to design their own extended quiet hours and policies. Designated quiet floors will be available in Darnall, Harbin and Village C depending on demand for such floors.

Are there any single occupancy rooms available?
We only have a handful of single occupancy rooms in First Year Residence Halls. These rooms are reserved for students with significant medical conditions necessitating such accommodations. Therefore, the vast majority of First Year students will be assigned to double or triple occupancy rooms.
When can I move into my room?
New students are scheduled to move into the residence halls on Friday, August 22, 2008, between 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 23, 2008 starting at 8:30 a.m.  Your move-in date is determined by where you are housed. You will be notified of the appropriate move-in date when you receive your housing assignment.

Transfer students assigned to Kennedy, McCarthy, and Reynolds Halls are scheduled to arrive on Friday, August 22, 2008. All other transfer students are scheduled to move into their residence halls and apartments on Saturday, August 23, 2008 .

Please make arrangements to move in on your respective date. Do not request to move in early. We cannot offer early move-in because our residence halls are occupied over the summer.
When do Fall semester classes begin?
Fall semester classes begin on Wednesday, August 27, 2008.
When do the residence halls close for winter break? When do they open for spring semester?
All halls close for the winter break at noon, Thursday, December 19, 2008. All halls reopen for the Spring semester at Noon on Tuesday, January 6, 2009.
How are the residence halls furnished?
The University has provided the following in each room: dresser/closet space, desk, chair, bed and mattress, book shelves, and window coverings. You can see average sizes of room and furniture dimensions on our general room information page. You should provide your own linens, pillow, mattress cover, blankets and bedspread. The sizes of mattresses around campus can vary. Mattresses are typically twin extra long, 36" x 80". It is suggested that you either use flat sheets or fitted bottom sheets in the twin extra long size. Students who are assigned to Darnall Hall should note that beds in that residence hall are standard sized twin beds. You can see average room and furniture dimensions on our general room information page. Please also consult our list of suggested things to bring and prohibited items.
Are the residence hall rooms carpeted?
Yes, all residence halls are carpeted.
Can I bring my own room furniture?
No. All basic furniture is provided by the University and must remain in each room. Do not bring mattresses or large items of furniture. Waterbeds, spas and water chairs are expressly prohibited in the residence halls.
What items should I bring with me?
Please consult our list of suggested items to bring with you by clicking here.
What items are prohibited in the residence halls?

What size refrigerators are permitted in the residence halls?
Refrigerators are limited to a maximum capacity of 3 cubic feet. Rental units that meet safety requirements are available each year at registration under the sponsorship of a student club.
Are the residence halls wired for Internet access?
All residence halls and apartments are wired for Internet access. There is a jack for each student assigned to the room.
How do I sign up for phone/cable/Internet access?
All students will have Internet access and basic phone service (one phone line) in the residence halls. These two services will be active when students move into their assignments. Students may sign up for voicemail, additional phone lines, or cable television through Student Access +. For more information on cable television, phone service, and Internet connections, please visit this link.
How do I sign up for a meal plan?
You should check your New Student Guide.  You may also find helpful information at the following site.
Are there laundry facilities in residence halls?
Laundry facilities are available in all residence halls. They are located on the lower level of Copley, Darnall, LXR, and Harbin Halls; on each floor of New South; the 3rd floor East Wing of Village C and on the 1st floor of McCarthy. Laundry facilities are also found in central locations in each of the apartment complexes. The laundry machines are paid for electronically by using your GOCard University ID card. You are responsible for your own laundry arrangements. There is no housekeeping service for personal use.
Where do you go to pick up packages?
Packages should be addressed to you in the following format to ensure proper routing:
Student Name
Your Residence Hall Office (e.g. Village C RHO)
Housing Assignment (e.g. Harbin Hall 103)
Georgetown University
37th and O Streets, NW
Washington, DC 20057

Packages are received by the Residence Hall Office (RHO). You will receive an e-mail notification that you have a package waiting for you. You may go to the RHO during their operating hours to sign for and pick up your package.
I am traveling from a long distance and will be shipping my belongings. When will packages be accepted at the residence halls?
The Residence Hall Offices (RHO) will accept packages as they are received. Packages received for students moving in on Friday will not be made available until Saturday to prevent confusion with the Move In process. If you need to send any personal belongings, we encourage you to have them arrive after you have settled in . Please make your shipping plans accordingly. The delivery services and the University are inundated with packages during the opening days of the Fall semester. This will cause delays in receiving. Please bring any item or belonging with you that you consider critical to your health or that you will need in the first few days of school. The Housing Office will not accept packages on behalf of students. You are the only person allowed to pick up your packages from the RHO and you must present a valid ID.
