CHARMS Detailed Instructions - Search

Access the search options by clicking on Search for Roommate Here
on the CHARMS main page.

The search page will show you three different options for searching (click on a link below to read about that option) :

Search by netID

Searching by NetID is for use only in the case that two students already know each other before coming to Georgetown, and have already agreed to be roommates. Only a small number of students are expected to use this option.

You must know the NetID of the student with whom you want to live.

Clicking on Search by NetID, you will see a field in which you should enter the NetID of the student with whom you want to live:
1
On the next screen, you will see a screen identifying the student you are requesting:

Clicking on the link will bring you to a final confirmation. Confirming this final page will send an invitation to the student you request. He/she must accept the invitation for the roommate pair to be valid.

Search for an exact match

The fastest way to search for a roommate is to search for an exact match. This will attempt to find a student in the database who has indicated the same preference for every category as you. Note that this is done without regard to the degree of importance assigned to the category for either you or the other student (e.g. if you said that you don't smoke and it's of great importance to you (rating=10), the exact matching process will match you with a student that doesn't smoke, but for whom the category may only rate a 3).

We have found that there are very few times that an exact match will exist. If there is not a student who has recorded the same preference as you for every category, the page will then automatically try to identify a match for you based on key categories (smoking, neat, sharing and study environment and location. We have found that most students will find a match based on this process.

If the database finds an exact match for you, you will see a message like the following:

If the database finds a partial match based on the fields mentioned above, you will see an appropriate message:

Click on a student number to see the full profile and to exchange message with that student.

You may not find an exact or a partial match based on the above categories. Try one of the other search options to specify which categories you want to search.
Search using categories

Searching using categories lets you fine-tune your search. You can search for students using any categories. Additionally, while the Search for Exact Match feature searches for students that match your preferences, searching by categories lets you search for a student whose answer to a question might not match your preference (e.g. a student who likes to study in a room might be best matched up with a student who studies in the library).

To search using all categories, just click on the checkbox next to All Categories and click on the Search button.

We have found that the greater number of categories you search on, the fewer matches you find. So you may want to limit the number of categories you search on. You can specify the categories to include in your search by clicking on the checkbox next to the category. In the example below, the student is searching on the smoking, neatness, study environment, and time-of-day-at-best categories.

After you have selected your categories, click on the Search button.

On the next screen, you will enter the criteria for your search. For each of the categories you have specified, you can indicate a preference, and optionally a degree specified by the respondants.

For example, to search for students who prefer a quiet study environment, regardless of the priority that student puts on quietness while studying, select Quiet and leave the other columns blank:

If you want to find a student who insists on quiet while studying, use the left two columns to specify a degree, as shown below:

The above will locate students who answered Quiet and assigned it an importance of 8 or above.

When you have specified the desired values for all of the categories, click on the Go! button.

The next screen will show the students who match your search.

If your search does not return any matches, you will see a message like this:

Re-run your search with fewer criteria.

Otherwise, you will see a list of student numbers. The CHARMS process protects the anonymity of students until a roommate pair has been formed, so you only see numbers, not names.

Clicking on a student number will bring you to the screen on which you can see the full profile for, and exchange messages with, the student you have located.
