CHARMS Detailed Instructions - Main Page

The CHARMS main menu will supply all the tools you will use to complete the roommate matching process.

From the outset, or at any time during the roommate matching process, a student may decide to remove him/herself from CHARMS. This is an option open to all students for whatever reason.

Does this mean that you will not receive a roommate? No, virtually all incoming students will have a roommate in their housing assignment. Choosing to remove yourself from the CHARMS process means that you will not have to select your own roommate and you will not be available for someone else to select you from within CHARMS. The Housing Services staff will match you with another student. We will match you as close as is possible with another student based on your shared preferences. The size of the pool from which the Housing staff will match roommates will depend on how many students remove themselves from CHARMS or how many students have not found a match at the end of the CHARMS process. As such the degree of similarity between you and the student we match you with is hard to predict.

If you select this option, you will see a confirmation screen verifying that you want to opt out of CHARMS:

Following the link will show you confirmation that you have removed yourself from CHARMS.

The "Search for roommates here" link will take you to the search options.

The lower part of the main menu will show you all of the interaction you have had with other students:
  • The Message Center in the left pane lists all students with whom you have exchanged messages. If you have assigned a nickname to the student, the nickname will display alongside the student number. Click on the link to go into the message room to see the full profile for and to exchange further messages with the student, or to invite the student to be your roommate.

  • The middle pane shows the invitations you have extended. Clicking on the student number/nickname link will take you back into the message room for the two of you. The status of the invitation also displays, along with a link to withdraw the invitation if you have changed your mind about the invitation.

  • The right pane similarly shows all of the invitations other students have extended to you, along with the status of those invitations. You can accept or decline invitations using the links provided.

Over time, students might accumulate invitations in which they are no longer interested, or which are no longer available to them. The third link at the top of the page

allows you to hide all those invitations for which the status is not "Pending".

This will reduce the number of items on the screen....

...and show you only those invitations still open:

You can see all invitations again by clicking on the "Show all invitations" link.
