CHARMS Detailed Instructions - Exchange Messages

Main Page Search Exchange Messages Invite FAQ

To allow students to exchange messages while protecting the anonymity of all participants, we have designed a system of message rooms.

A message room exists for a distinct pair of students. Only those two students who belong to the message room can view the comments therein.

A message room is created any time you click on a student ID, as you do when you see your search results.

The right side of the message room page will show you the complete profile of the other student , including all preferences he/she has recorded, as well as any comments entered.

The left side of the page will have a space for sending a message to the student, along with any messages already exchanged between you and the other student.

Keeping track of students by number only can be confusing, so you can assign nicknames to another student on the message room page. This nickname will display next to the student number throughout the CHARMS system. Just enter a nickname that will help you identify this student in the space provided.....

...and the nickname will remain in the system.

When you send a message, the other student will receive an email saying that a message has been posted. The recipient has to follow the link into the message room to view the message.

If after exchanging messages with a student, you do not want to extend an invitation to the student to be your roommate, you don't need to do anything further.

If your exchanges lead you to think the two of you may be compatible as roommates, you can invite that student to be your roommate.

If a student has invited you to be his/her roommate, links to accept or decline the invitation will appear at the top of this page (you can also accept/decline from the CHARMS main page):
