Dear Students,
Today, Tuesday, June 19th, marks the beginning of the Campus Housing Roommate Matching System (CHARMS).
To take part in CHARMS, you must have completed the Living Preference Questionnaire (LPQ). Students already having completed the LPQ may work with CHARMS, but may no longer make changes to the LPQ. Any students not having already completed the LPQ must first do so before participating in CHARMS.
Students may access the CHARMS process at: http://housing.georgetown.edu/academic/new/
Documentation on how to use CHARMS may be found at http://housing.georgetown.edu/academic/new/index.cfm?fuse=charmsoverview , or at the top of the CHARMS main menu. The deadline for finding your own roommate through the CHARMS process is July 16, 2007. Students not having a roommate by this date will be matched with another student by the Housing staff according to preferences indicated on the LPQ.
If at any point you decide that you do not want to take part in CHARMS, and would rather the Housing staff match you with a roommate, you may click on the "Remove yourself from the roommate matching process" link at the top of the CHARMS main menu.
If you already know the student with whom you wish to room:
- Click on the "Search for roommate here" link on the CHARMS main menu
- Click on "Search by netID"
- Enter the netID of the student with whom you wish to room
- CHARMS will generate an email invitation to the student you specified.
- Once the student follows the instructions contained in the email, the roommate pair will be formed.
- Only one student in the roommate pair needs to take the steps outlined above.
As you work in CHARMS, keep the following in mind:
- Pace yourself. Don't feel rushed to make a roommate match. You are looking for someone with whom you'll live for your entire first year at Georgetown, so invest some time in the process. At the same time, don't leave CHARMS to the last minute. Every year, a handful of students put off looking for a roommate until the last minute, which limits the options available.
- Once a roommate pair is formed, the pair may not be dissolved, so both students in the pair must be sure of their decision before finalizing the pair.
- Once a pair is formed, the two students will not have further access to CHARMS, including any prior communication with other students.
- The CHARMS process is designed to ensure anonymity. We encourage students not to reveal personally identifiable information about themselves in the process.
- We encourage students to be up-front and honest in their communication. The main obstacle to successful roommate matches through CHARMS, as reported in past years, was students not being truthful about themselves and/or what they look for in a potential roommate.
If you have any questions about the CHARMS process, be sure to consult the on-line documentation, and feel free to contact the Housing office at newstudenthousing@georgetown.edu or at (202) 687-4560.
